UK/ IRELAND TOUR GREENING INITIATIVES
For the UK/ Ireland leg of their 2007 world tour, the band commissioned a detailed survey of the environmental impact of their touring activities. The study examined event production, venue green initiatives, accommodation, catering and transport for the band, crew and equipment.
Having undertaken a green audit, the band incorporated the following eco-initiatives into their travelling production:
- Overland travel taken by coach rather than commercial flights where practicable
- Booking hotels with good environmental policies that are found close to the venues
- On tour caterers must try and source organic, local, seasonal, free-range and Fairtrade produce
- Use of reusable plates and cutlery where possible and ensuring any disposable items are made of recyclable materials
In addition to the steps Crowded House are taking they have asked their tour suppliers to take every reasonable step possible to reduce the environmental impact of the services they provide. The band has also asked all participating venues to provide details of their environmental policies and practices in key areas such as transport, energy use, and waste and recycling in an effort to encourage further environmental efficiencies.
Even with the best intentions and practices there will always be some greenhouse gas emissions produced through touring. Therefore a detailed forecast of the tour's direct emissions has been calculated (please see statistics below) and the remaining unavoidable CO2 emissions will be offset by the band.

GETTING TO AND FROM THE SHOWS USING PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Crowded House are also encouraging fans to consider the environmental impact of coming to the gigs.
Fan travel can account for up to 80% of a concert's greenhouse gas emissions, so the band hopes that fans will take advantage of public transport wherever possible or will investigate the possibility of car sharing when taking the bus or train is not an option.
Simply click on your venue's link listed below to find the best public transport option for you:

FURTHER ECO-STUFF
Check out the following simple tips to drastically reduce your carbon footprint when going to gigs.
- When booking tickets, think about taking the paperless option. You can now collect tickets at the event by presenting a reference number and credit card. This not only saves you money on postage but also cuts back on paper use and the environmental cost of sending stuff.
- If you're booking your tickets online please be sure to turn your computer off when you're done. A PC left on standby still eats up electricity - around ã50's worth a year according to consumer website,
Personal Computer World .
- Travel to and from gigs and festivals can make up a whopping 80% of the greenhouse gas emissions generated by an event. When possible, try and use public transport to get there. You won't have to fret about parking or polishing off the bands rider should you procure a backstage pass!
- If driving is the only option then please consider a ride share scheme. Either post a bulletin on the band's website looking for fellow gig goers in your area or alternately visit Liftshare.
- If you would like to make your travel to and from the gigs carbon neutral please visit Climate Friendly.

HELP FIGHT GLOBAL WARMING
Crowded House have teamed up with non-profit environmental group Reverb to descrease their carbon footprint while on tour. As well as working with Reverb to minimise and offset all of the estimated CO2 emissions on their tour, Crowded House are using B20 BioDiesel on their tour busses.
Fans can do their bit too by offsetting the impact of their own travel to the shows. Time to Change stickers, available at merchandise booths at the shows for a $5 donation, include a carbon credit equivalent to 150 miles of driving to help towards neutralising the CO2 your journey to the concert created. AUSTRALIA/ NEW ZEALAND TOUR GREENING INITIATIVES

When Crowded House's world tour comes to Australia and New Zealand in October/November 2007 the band will be doing so with the environment in mind. Reducing the tour's overall environmental footprint is an important goal in ensuring the band's activities are as sustainable as possible.
The venues that Crowded House will be playing at have been asked to provide details of the environmental initiatives and programs they have put in place. Many venues have developed their own environmental policies covering such areas as waste and recycling, energy management, recyclable packaging, water conservation and locally sourced goods and services.
The band are keen to work with those venues that take into account the environmental impacts of running such large entertainment facilities. Lets face it, environmental issues associated with buildings place an enormous strain on the environment if not managed properly.
By supporting venues that implement programs such as water efficient amenities, buying GreenPower for lighting and putting in place public place recycling systems to reduce the amount of waste directed to landfill, Crowded House hope to influence other venues to take up the environmental challenge.
While travelling through Australia and New Zealand the band will be tackling its own climate impact head on by offsetting those greenhouse emissions associated with the tour that cannot be avoided.
From an energy management perspective, avoiding and reducing energy consumption tops the list, but for energy that cannot be avoided such as venue electricity, air travel and road transport, offsetting these emissions makes environmental sense.
How does carbon offsetting work?
Crowded House has invested in renewable energy projects via Climate Friendly that will prevent the same amount of greenhouse gas emissions as the Australian/New Zealand leg of the tour emits.
Climate Friendly has previously purchased carbon credits from a range of national and international renewable energy generators such as the Te Apiti wind farm in New Zealand, Challicum Hills wind farms in Australia and are currently supporting new wind energy projects in Turkey, China and South Australia. These projects address the root cause of global warming; burning fossil fuels for energy, while meeting the highest global accreditation standards for carbon offset programs.
The end result is that the Australian/New Zealand leg of the tour is 100% carbon neutral and the band is playing a leading role in the fight against climate change.
Climate Friendly has earned a reputation as a leading provider of carbon neutral services. Their products have the strong support of WWF Internationally and their clients include climate expert Tim Flannery, Al Gore's Climate Project and a host of progressive companies, government bodies and leading environment groups from across the world. To find out more about becoming climate neutral you can visit Climate Friendly
